Gum Disease Treatments Adelaide

At The Dental Studio Adelaide we offer gum disease treatments to restore your smile, and help you protect against further progression of gum disease

Gum disease is caused by the same bacteria that cause decay. These bacteria feed on sugary carbohydrates in the food you consume and create a film on your teeth called plaque. If plaque is not removed from your teeth through proper cleaning, it can advance and start to affect the supporting structures of your teeth, including your gums. There are two types of gum disease; gingivitis and periodontitis.

Gingivitis treatment and prevention at The Dental Studio

Gingivitis is the first stage of gum disease. If plaque is not regularly and effectively cleaned from your teeth, it can inflame and irritate your gums, making them red and swollen. Gingivitis may also cause your gums to bleed on brushing or when eating. The good news is gingivitis is reversible by maintaining your regular active maintenance at The Dental Studio, while also performing proper care and maintenance at home.

Periodontitis treatment at The Dental Studio

If plaque is not removed in time, gingivitis may progress to periodontitis, causing the gums to pull away from your teeth and create a pocket where plaque becomes trapped and cannot be reached through brushing. Over time the plaque caught in the pockets hardens and becomes tartar, and as this builds up, the gums become further infected. Eventually this can cause the bone and gum around your tooth to shrink, exposing the roots of your teeth so they become wobbly, allowing pus to pool under the gum and cause a gum abscess. This can then cause the body’s immune system to attack its own tissue. Untreated periodontitis can result in tooth loss.

Periodontal pockets are not reversible, but with appropriate treatment at The Dental Studio, along with proper care and maintenance at home, it can be stopped from progressing and causing even more serious health issues.

Current research reports that the bacteria in our mouths does enter the blood stream and may instigate serious health conditions such as Stroke, Heart Disease, Diabetes complications, Alzheimer’s and Dementia and an increase risk of premature birth and low birth weight.
